SIA Licence Training – What Do I Choose?

SIA Licensing covers manned guarding (including security guarding, door supervision, close protection, cash and valuables in transit, and public space surveillance using CCTV), key holding and vehicle immobilising. Licensing ensures that private security operatives are ‘fit and proper’ persons who are properly trained and qualified to do their job.

At training track we offer SIA linked qualifications to become SIA licensed Door Supervisor, Security Guard or CCTV Operator. The duration of each of these courses is thirty classroom hours spread over either two weekends or four consecutive days.  During the course we cover all aspects of the job as a security professional. At the end of the course you will sit the exam, without which you will not gain your SIA licence and will not be permitted to operate as a security worker.

Security Officer / Door Supervisor

The working environments of security guards/security officers can vary and include; civic centres, hostels, care homes, fire stations, museums, leisure centres, sports fields, cemeteries, tourist information offices and almost all buildings/land owned by the local authority where there is potential risk. The work can be routine, boring even when nothing happens and exciting when it does.

The hours vary according to the place and the authority but are based upon the standard 37-hour week. Shift rota patterns, anti-social hours and night work are usual but enhancements are paid for hours worked between 8pm and 6am. You are expected to wear a smart uniform and protective clothing is provided where necessary – on a building site for example.

Door supervisors, on the other hand, are also trained for physical intervention and that makes them the ideal candidate to work outside pubs, clubs, retail shops, events like football matches and in other words, at any place where one has to deal with members of the public.

CCTV Operator

CCTV operators work seated in front of banks of VDU screens. They are usually expected to work in a shift system over 24 hours. They may work in small teams or alone and are in frequent telephone and radio contact with colleagues, security staff and police.

CCTV operators may be responsible for up to 15 screens, receiving live pictures that come in automatically from over 100 surveillance cameras. They are required to monitor the screens constantly.

They are also able to operate cameras themselves from the control room and decide which areas to concentrate on at particular times. For instance, when they know that car park attendants are due to collect the cash from ticket machines, they monitor them. If council employees need to enter their offices out of normal hours, CCTV operators watch them as they move through the building. At night they regularly scan cleaners working in empty buildings.
